What is DMARC and why it’s important for your business
If you have an online presence, complete with a professional, and I mean not a Gmail/Yahoo email address, then THIS is something you need to listen to closely..
As most of us know, although the major players in business and finance are afraid to say, we’re in a recession, and recessions lead to higher-than-normal cyber crimes.
One such cybercrime is Phishing.
For those unaware of what that is, It’s basically online scammers developing and using a seemingly legit website to “lure” unsuspecting people to provide their personal or financial information.
Now what’s more interesting is that now scammers are leveraging legit business owners domain names to create fake email accounts to send spam or worse to the same potential victims. Usually the business owner(s) are completely unaware of this happening until they get:
- Increase in complaint calls
- Cease and desist letters
- Or worse, a potential Lawsuit against them
One surefire way to prevent such an attack is to have a DMARC record installed at your host server level (Your hosting company)
What is DMARC and what does it do?
DMARC, short for:
- Domain-based
- Message
- Authentication
- Reporting &
- Conformance
It ensures your incoming and outgoing emails are sent from ONLY your official domain and authorized by you!
How DMARC Works
A DMARC policy allows a sender, in this case, your email server, to indicate that their messages are protected highly protected and pre-authenticated, and tells a receiver, the recipient’s email client, what to do if neither of those authentication methods passes – such as junk or reject the message.
DMARC removes the guesswork from the receiver’s handling of these failed messages, limiting or eliminating the user’s exposure to potentially fraudulent & harmful messages.
It also provides a way for the email receiver to report back to the sender about messages that pass and/or fail DMARC evaluation.
DMARC is simply an added layer of protection for your business against cybercriminals looking to profit off of your business or brand
If you are unsure if you have DMARC for your domain and emails, it’s important to get that checked out as soon as possible, preferably by RDG
