Understanding the Value of A Website Presence-Part 3

This is the Third in a 4-part series about the importance of a web presence for your small business. See Part I and Part II to catch up if you haven’t already!

An Effective Website should be a natural extension, reflecting all the great aspects of your business or brand!

Here are 8 steps your should take for your business website that it absolutely cannot do without!

1) A Clear Description of Who You Are

Make it obvious to your visitors as to What you or your company is about so when they land at your site, they know exactly why they are there in the first place.

Alot of existing websites have GREAT products and services to offer, yet they are overshadowed by a website design that doesn’t connect with the product or service, and most importantly, the visitor.

2) A Simple, Sensible URL (ie. the domain name.)

If you’re starting out, aim for a ‘.com, .org, or .net’,  stay away from dashes and numbers, and try to make it as easy and memorable as possible.

For example: https://conservationconstructionservicesofidaho.com…that’s 39 letters not including url prefixes,  for those that bothered to count…your fingers would probably get too tired to type this link, let alone remember it.

Also imagine how that would look on a business card, or signage at events.  A little forethought on this subject will definitely pay off in the long run.

3) A User-friendly, Easy-To-Use Website

Nothing’s worse than trying to fight through a overly complicated website to get one simple piece of information. Make it obvious where to find the answers people are looking for.  (bullet points and bold key points is great).

Also don’t let your visitors suffer through TLDR (Too Long, Didn’t Read) syndrome.  Its understandable that you have ALOT of great information to share about your service or product, but keep it short and highlight the key points to keep your visitors wanting more!

4) Easy To Find Contact Information

It’s simple. If you want people to get in touch with you, make it obvious how to do it! The most common (and instinctive for viewers) placement for contact info is in the top right or left of the homepage. It’s also a good idea to have contact info at the bottom of every page as an extra measure to make your viewers’ experience as seamless as possible.

5) Obvious Call To Action

It should be clear to your viewer(s) where they should go next from one page in your website. On every page, have a link to purchase, contact, or learn more, as appropriate. However there is such a thing as Link Overload..so make the decisions easy for your visitor and use purposeful links!

6) Customer Testimonials

Show everyone how great you are, right up front. Posting honest words from real people builds trust and gives a boost to your business’ reputation.

An even Better Idea, Ask to interview your current/past customers! With their permission, you can post their testimonials to your site and visitors can learn DIRECTLY how great your business or product is!  A Great Example can be found HERE.

7) Fresh, Quality Content

Make sure your website is doing what it’s supposed to do with content that is informative, concise, and relevant. Don’t let it get stale- keep your content current and updated. Some great suggestions would be:

  • Adding a Blog to your existing site that you can update (WordPress is THE best for this)

  • Setting up a feed directly from your Social Media Channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) to your site

  • Update Your Site with Fresh Visual Images

These suggestions are not only great for your visitors, but for major Search Engines (think Google) that are ALWAYS on the lookout for new content.

8) Plan Against TLDR!

Remember, Online consumers have VERY short attention spans and little patience for cumbersome websites. Make sure your design is simple and easy to skim over for the information they need.

Just as important, make sure your content is to the point, bullet points and visuals are always good too!

Most of All, don’t make your visitors suffer through TLDR (Too Long, Didn’t Read) Syndrome!
